Client Spotlight: Charles, Jerry, Bentley, Luna, and Rusty
Charles and his beloved pet family have been PAWS clients for eleven years. Their connection began when Charles learned about PAWS while he was active in another Shanti program. “I love being part of PAWS,” said Charles. “They provide veterinary services, a pet food bank, and emotional support to guide me through my pets’ lives.”
Charles and Jerry, his partner of 33 years, now have three pets: Bentley, a 65-pound English Bulldog; an orange Tabby cat named Rusty; and Luna, the newest addition, who they adopted a month ago. Luna used to live on a farm north of Sacramento. When her former human guardians could no longer take care of her, Charles and Jerry stepped in and adopted the 2-year old Miniature English Bulldog. Bentley and Rusty only took fifteen minutes to warm up to Luna, and the three get along famously. They all snuggle and play together, and “Luna rules the roost,” said Charles.
Ever since COVID began, Charles hasn’t been able to consistently exercise, so he gets out of the house on his twice-daily walks with the dogs. He says regular care of his pets keeps him from getting depressed and brings a routine to his life. “We are one big happy family”.
Charles is grateful for PAWS’ care and assistance. Without the support of PAWS, he says, “There would be times I would have to borrow money to provide food for my pets and emergency vet bills. PAWS gives me hope that good people want to help San Francisco’s animals and people. We feel supported by PAWS and Shanti.”
